Moulton and District Gardeners' Society (MDGS)

2025 Programme

January 22nd 'Ancient Woodlands of Northamptonshire'  Christine Rowe
This talk looks at what makes an ancient woodland, the types of tress found, hunting & how medieval kings used the forests.

February 26th 'Growing Vegetables in Small Spaces'  Jeff Bates
Why grow your own?  What are the most important considerations?  All aspects covered with Q&A sessions, followed by slide presentation.

March 26th 'Magnolias'  Dan Winter
Dan is the Head Gardener at Evenley Wood Garden.  As the garden has acid & alkaline soil, & the woodland offers a protected micro-climate, a wide range of Magnolias can be grown as part of the collection.
There will also be the 'Spring Container Competition' (indoor or outdoor containers, pots no bigger than 12" / 30cm diameter)

April 23rd 'Garden Quiz' & Hot Cross Buns

May 28th 'A Garden for all Seasons'  Diane Clement
There is a flower in Diane's garden on every day of the year.  This is achieved through the use of different situations including shade and sun, moist and dry.  Diane will give lots of practical ideas to increase flowering season.

July 23rd 'The Fragrant Garden'  Pip Smith
Gardens can be fragrant all year round with scent throughout the seasons.  This popular talk highlights many of the garden favourites as well as some of the lesser known plants, all perfect for providing a fragrant boost to your garden.

September 24th 'Teabags, Bras & Tights' (Part 1)  Darren Rudge
Household items that make gardening more cost effective; top tips & some trivia thrown in for free.
Photograph Competition: 'Widlife on a Plant'

October 22nd AGM Cheese & Wine Evening
  (Annual subscriptions due)

November 26th 'The 12 Plants of Christmas'  Timothy Walker
This is a very personal take on the plants that feature in the celebration of Christmas.  Aprt from the pear tress in which sat the partridge, there are no plants in the 12 days of Christmas according to the folk song.  This talk puts the record straight and rewrites the plant-blind zoocentric song replacing partridges with poinsettas, and maids with mistletoe.

The society also arranges a number of trips throughout the year:
